The nice man at the music store was very understanding about us wanting to return the keyboard and try a different instrument. But when I tried to hold the recorder with my feet, it slipped out of my grip. And the drumsticks kept flying out of my toes when I tried the drums. One almost hit the nice man in the eye! And don’t even ask about the tuba and violin. Disasters, people. Disasters.

“I guess we’ll just have to keep trying,” Mom said on the way home from the music store.

I sniffled and looked out the car window. “I don’t want to try any more instruments,” I said. “I’m not the musician I thought I was.”

“Aven,” Mom said, sighing. “You haven’t given it a good enough chance. It’s only been a few days since you decided to learn an instrument.”

“I’ve tried every instrument on earth, Mom,” I said, wiping my cheek on my shoulder.

“Not every instrument,” said Mom.

“I think I’ll just stay home from school that day,” I said. “I don’t even want to go to the talent show.”

Mom shook her head and said, “The Aven I know doesn’t hide from a challenge. She meets it head on.”

“Well, my head’s just not on for this one,” I declared. “My head is definitely off.”

“That’s . . . not what I meant, Aven,” Mom said. “What I meant was that you usually go after a challenge and do the best you can. All you can do is your best, and that’s good enough always. I could never be disappointed in you for doing your best.”

“But this time my best is just bad noises,” I said. “Big bad disappointing noises.”

Mom clucked her tongue. “You, Aven Green, are giving up too fast. And that’s the only disappointing thing about all of this.”
